Died peacefully at home, October 10, 2016. Mary was born on May 7, 1948, in Camden, South Carolina, the eldest daughter of The Rev. Dr. Stiles B. Lines and Margaret Van Buren Lines. She was a graduate of Stuart Hall in Staunton, Virginia, and Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, following which she moved to Nashville in 1970 and then met and married Joseph Greer Cummings, Jr. in 1971. Their marriage spanned almost forty-five years.

She was a graduate of Stuart Hall in Staunton, Virginia, and Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, following which she moved to Nashville in 1970 and then met and married Joseph Greer Cummings, Jr. in 1971. Their marriage spanned almost forty-five years.

Mary and Greer were blessed to have two wonderful children, Joseph Greer Cummings, III (Jody), of Nashville, Tennessee, and Mary Cummings Knox (Molly) of Atlanta, Georgia. Mary was very active in the school affairs of her children at The Oak Hill School, Montgomery Bell Academy and The Harpeth Hall School. She was a member of The Junior League of Nashville and participated for many years in the Women of the Church at St. George's Episcopal Church and the Christmas Toy Store at St. Luke's Community House.

Mary is survived by her loving husband, Greer; her son, Jody, her daughter-in-law, Mary Britton, and her Cummings grandchildren, Marion, Powell, Adelaide, and Cecelia; her daughter, Molly, her son-in-law, Reid, and her Knox grandchildren, Mimi, Bryan, and Greer; her mother, Peggy, of Nashville, Tennessee; her sister, Meg Thrash, and brother-in-law, Tom Thrash, of Atlanta, Georgia; her sister, Sally Starr, and brother-in-law, Bryan Starr, of Atlanta, Georgia; her brother-in-law, Dick Cummings, and sister-in-law, Patty Cummings, of Nashville, Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father.

Mary was a kind and gentle soul. She will be greatly missed by her immediate and extended family and many cherished friends. Contributions may be made in Mary's memory to St. George's Episcopal Church, Faith Family Medical Center, or the charity of one's choice .

A service of burial will be held for Mary at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2016, at St. George's Episcopal Church 4715 Harding Road, Nashville, Tennessee, with visitation for two hours preceding the service in Hampton Hall at the church.
